SYFA Scottish Cup 1st Round
Sunday 20.9.09 10.30am
Maud team line: Fraser (L Cordiner 35); Robertson, Calder (Turriff 35), Masson, Daniel; McCafferty, McLean (Simpson 25), Burr(Barbour 20), Mair; Deakin (R Cordiner 35), Anderson
Any team named Dee clearly deserves the utmost respect given the footballing heritage it is upholding. Whilst Maud treated their opponents with this respect they proceeded to strike faster than an Aberdeen bus driver to take the lead.
McLean headed an opposition throw back in to Deakin at the edge of the box. Blair deftly flicked it on to ANDERSON who lashed it low past the keeper.
Within 5 minutes, McLean instigated the next chance finding Anderson at the edge of the area. Nathan swivelled to slip the ball through to the overlapping Mair who took one touch and sent a curling effort towards the postage stamp corner. The keeper was equal to it, however, as he hurled himself across goal to concede a corner with an acrobatic save.
Maud refused to be denied though and doubled their lead from the corner. Jack Daniel provided his usual excellent delivery and it cannoned off an unfortunate defender for an o.g.
3-0 followed on 20 minutes when DEAKIN outstripped the defence to latch on to another McLean through ball, steadied and coolly slotted home.
After a flurry of half-time substitutions, Maud went 4 up. Anderson took control on the D and rolled a perfect pass to the inrushing SIMPSON who hammered it first time past the helpless keeper.
Mair then won possession wide right, cut inside and switched play to Simpson on the left. Gavin drove on to shoot but his effort was cleared.
Maud continued to dominate and created a series of clear chances which on another day would have seen them comfortably into double figures. It was no surprise when DEAKIN made it 5-0, showing real tenacity to force his way through after McLean had won possession. Again Blair kept a cool head and stroked home in assured fashion.
Banks o’ Dee then had their first and only shot on target but were genuinely unlucky to see a clever lob clatter off the bar to safety.
Maud were playing their best football now and Simpson was denied goal of the game when his volley smacked off the upright after Burr and Mair had combined to set him up.
Ryan CORDINER completed the scoring, holding off a strong challenge to calmly slip the ball past the keeper from 15 yards.
Maud weren’t finished, however, and struck the woodwork again through Burr when he thumped an effort against the bar following great lead up work involving Deakin, Cordiner & Simpson.
A comfortable win with a good spread of scorers and a clean sheet sees Maud through to meet either Newmachar or Kemnay in round 2. Well done lads!
