Sunnybank 1 - 4 Maud
Rainbow International Superleague
My Match Report
With a couple of fairly crappy performances behind us in the last few weeks Kris and Billy decided to change things around a bit this week with Jason coming back from the start for the first time in a few months and generally a few changes of position. The conditions were bloody awful with a howling wind and hail showers in our back from the kick off but the lads started off really well, taking the game to what is supposedly a team capable of winning the League, we'll see ! After only 4 minutes, Stevie Powell got the ball wide left and he dropped a ball into the penalty area where one of their defenders only managed to clear it to John Willox on the edge of the box, he brought it down and hit a tremendous shot high across the keeper and into the net, 1 - 0 and a great start. Sunnybank then came back at us and a couple of outstanding saves from Paul, firstly from under the bar from a header from a corner, then when they broke into the box on our left he managed to tip a shot over the bar. After 12 minutes John Willox took the ball on the edge of their box and played it back to Gav, his shot was ferocious enough (plenty of big words today) but it was past the post. Then just after, following a ball into our box that was cleared, it came out to one of their players who saw Paul off his line and his looping shot went over him and into the net for the equaliser. After 17 minutes we nearly took the lead again when Iain Arthur got his head on the end of a long ball into their box from a corner at the far post but the ball hit the post and was cleared. Just on the half hour we pushed up and they tried to play it back to their keeper, Stevie Whyte saw the opportunity to chase it down and did well as the ball broke to Gibby, he took it to his right and fired it into the net , 2 - 1 and well deserved. With 10 minutes to half time they again broke through our back four who were playing a littel too deep and only a fine save with his feet by Paul prevented the equaliser. Just before the brerak we had a great chance to finish the game there and then when Molby took the ball about 40 yards out from their goal, he ran at the defence and was into the box leaving them for dead, his shot low to the inside of the post was just saved by the keeper when we all thought he'd scored. It would have been justice for some of the absolute crap being shouted at him by the Sunnybank Management, nothing to do with football, and it just showed the level of their mentality (i.e. LOW!) if that was all they could come up with, pathetic ! Still we went in 2 -1 up and had been playing some good stuff. Gibby has their central defenders in his pocket and generally all over the park everyone was putting so much effort in.
We started off even better the 2nd half against the wind but after 11 minutes Paul had to be alert to turn a long range low bouncing shot away for a corner. Just after Jinksy (you'll find out why he's called that later!) laid the ball off to Jason coming in on the edge of the box but his shot was blocked and cleared. They were getting really frustrated and we were simply playing some fantastic football, breaking through their defence on a regular basis, but after 29 minutes we finished them off when Gav fed the ball to John wide right of the goal and again hit a fantastic rising shot with his left foot across the keeper and into the net, 3 -1 game over you baas ! Just after Molby broke again from the half way line running at goal his rifled shot was well saved by he keeper. Not long after, Jinksy earned his nickname if not a goal when a great passage of play by the lad on the right of their box ended with John taking the ball past dozens of defenders in the box, twisting and turning like a very twisty turny thing it looked like he was ready to bury the ball into the net with his left foot, but then dragged it back and by the time he'd gone around the roundabout a few more times the ball got cleared!! With 5 minutes to go, Zander, who had come on a sub 2 minutes earlier, got on the end of a long low pass from Ush from the right to beat the keeper for our 4th goal, brilliant. Richie, who had also just come on, almost put the icing on the cake when he got the ball in the box but his low shot was saved.
All in ll this was a tremendous performance against one of the so called big teams, on this evidence we looked much more like title challengers and could easily have doubled our score. Paul hardly had a save to make in the 2nd half and it was really pleasing to see so many players put so much effort and skill in a come away with a great result, well done lads!
Grahams Report
MAUD BREAK THE BANK AT HEATHRYFOLD
After a couple of defeats, the management made several changes to the
starting line and reshuffled the team. With a howling sleety gale blowing the
game kicked off. Sunnybank forced the first corner of the game in the second
minute but it came to nothing. Bouncing back, Maud's Powell sent in a lovely
cross into the penalty box which was headed clear as far as Willox who buried it
into the top right hand corner in the 4th minute. Following a great block by
Usher from a Sunnybank free kick, Leask kept Maud in front with 2 great saves,
Middleton should have scored with a thundering shot off a ball passed back from
Willox just inside the Sunnybank box but it went wide past the right post. A
head butt on Murray saw the ref strangely dish out a yellow to the offending
player and to Murray as well. A Sunnybank free kick was launched in and cleared
out as far as Johnston who saw Leask off his line and sent in a lobbed ball over
and into the net for the equaliser in the 14th minute. Arthur was unlucky from a
corner crossed in from the left as his header was just pushed past the post for
a corner to nothing. Gordon of Sunnybank was unlucky as after opening up Maud's
defence his final shot was blasted into the side netting. In the 30th minute a
poorly weighted pass back to the Sunnybank keeper was chased down by Whyte wo
knocked it across to Stephen who made no mistake with his right foot to put Maud
back in the driving seat. Again in the 35th and a further 3 minutes later, Leask
denied Sunnybank with two excellent saves to keep Maud in front. In the 40th
minute a great solo run from 40 yards out by Murray whose final shot was just
tipped past the post by the keeper for a corner to nothing. So half time came
and Maud went in with a one goal lead full of confidence.
Starting off as well as they finished the first half a good cross in from Whyte
was wasted with no one able to put a foot on it. Some good end to end play with
Maud opening up Sunnybank time and time again. A good offside call by the near
side linesman saved Maud as the Sunnybank striker broke through the defence. A
Sunnybank free kick from about 28 yards out on the left was flicked over to the
far post but headed past. Finally Maud made the game theirs when a lovely fed
back ball from Middleton to Willox who side stepped his marker and sent in a
rocket of a shot over the keeper and into the back of the net to double his
tally of the afternoon. Sunnybank not to be outdone came back at Maud and nearly
scored from a long throw in from the right but Gordon sent his shot past the
post. A good save by the Sunnybank keeper again denied Murray a chance on the
score sheet after his run from midfield. In the 85th minute Maud put the game
beyond reach when great inter linking play from Usher onto A Davidson who
finished off with an easy tap in for goal number four. An absolutely fantastic
performance today by each and every one of Maud's players so now we look forward
to next Saturday the 12th April at home to Dyce with a 2.30pm kick off.
