Lngside 2 - 0 Maud
Rainbow International Superleague
My Match Report
With all the holiday bums back, the Management decided to stick with the same team as last week except for Sisco, who had an argument with a car door last week and lost ! He also lost this place cos playing in a sling aint easy. Once again we started off really well, after only a minute Gav took a free kick about 25 yards out but their keeper tipped it around the post for a corner which came to nowt. After 5 minutes from another corner the ball broke out to the edge of the box where Gav again tried his luck with a volley but it was easily held by the keeper. Then a couple of minutes later we should really have scored when a Zander corner from the right was missed at the near post by the Longside defenders but as the ball ran along the goal line, nobody could get to it to put it away. These chances were starting to run out and although the lads were playing some decent football it lacked penetration and it took another 18 minutes before we got close again. Molby collected the ball on the left and ran across the defence on the edge of their box where he was fouled. He got up to take the free kick but it looked like he mis-hit it and it trundled past the post. On the half hour Gav took another corner from the left, this time it was cleared from under the bar and away. By now Longside were coming back into the game and although they never looked like scoring, our forward play was breaking down far too often in the middle. At half time we felt we should have been at least a goal up, but if we don't trouble the keeper then we get what we deserve.
The second half was almost the same as last
week, after 8 minutes Longside broke down the right and Paul had to make a good
stop at his near post to stop a goal. Steve Whyte had a long range effort after
17 minutes that was well wide and a couple of minutes later they got a soft
penalty that was not given by the referee but was by the nearside linesman. It
was a pretty bad effort and was dragged well wide of the right hand post so it
was a warning but we never took advantage. Even with Gibby and Stevie Powell
coming on the pattern of play didn't change and in fact Longside were getting
much more confident and putting more direct pressure on our goal. Then with10
minutes to go they got a soft free kick about 25 yards out on the right, the
free kick was taken and seemed to go through a ruck of players and past Paul,
ending up in the back of the net. Not long after Molby was sent off for a 2nd
yellow and that was really it. With 5 minutes to go they got another free kick,
this time out on the left, again it was taken and went under Paul and in for the
2nd goal, I think at that point Longside must have got the game mixed up with a
Cup Final the way they celebrated !
So for the 3rd week out of 4, we have not been
anything like the previous games, before the Hillhead game every time we went
forward we looked like scoring, however against Hillhead, Formartine and now
Longside, we have let teams off with some nice approach play but absolutely no
cutting edge. We need to capture that early form again for the final 7 league
games if we are going to win the League !!
